Hot September CPI and PPI push Bitcoin below $80,000 and lift Fed hike odds
Two hotter-than-expected U.S. inflation reports in two days drove Bitcoin below $80,000 and pushed October Fed hike odds from about 20% up into the 40s.
Why it matters
Two consecutive hot inflation prints reset the rate path that crypto prices trade against, pushed $939 million in leveraged positions out of the market and cut odds of Bitcoin reaching $100,000 by Christmas to 9.7%, while ETF outflows of $859 million added to selling pressure. A $12 billion options expiry on Oct. 30 and concentrated positioning near $78,000 and $95,000 could move the market further once the Fed meets Oct. 27-28.

What happened
Bitcoin traded just under $84,000 on Oct. 14 before the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported September consumer prices up 3.7% year on year, up from 3.4% in August, with core CPI at 2.6% against 2.4% previously, and both readings above the 3.6% and 2.5% forecasts. One day later the same agency reported producer prices up 1.3% in September, the largest monthly gain since March 2022, taking annual wholesale inflation to 6.3%, the fastest since December 2022, with gasoline producer prices jumping 20.3% and core PPI rising 0.7% against a 0.3% expectation. Bitcoin fell to an intraday low of $79,730 on Oct. 15, recovered to around $82,000, and was quoted at $81,473 on Oct. 16. The data revived bets on a Federal Reserve rate increase before the Oct. 27-28 FOMC meeting, and the Fed had already lifted its target range to 3.75%-4.00% on Sept. 16. Estimates of the probability of an October hike varied sharply across outlets and platforms, ranging from about 20% before the CPI release to 47% after it on LSEG data, while CME FedWatch was cited at 29.3% and later 34% on Thursday and Polymarket and Myriad traders priced it near 28%. CoinGape reported Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack saying at a Goldman Sachs event that persistent inflation could force a more aggressive policy stance, and noted Chicago Fed President Austan Goolsbee calling the week's data discouraging, while earlier in the week New York Fed President John Williams said he saw no need for further increases in 2027, which had helped lift Bitcoin toward $84,000. CoinSlate counted $939.24 million in liquidations across 176,506 traders, citing CoinGlass, and Bitcoin Magazine noted the coin sits nearly 36% below its $126,080 record from last October. Analysts disagree on what the weakness means: Sygnum's Can-Luca Köymen put the range at roughly $80,000 to $87,000 into the midterms with support at $80,000-$81,500 and $78,000 as the next floor, Algoz's Stephen Wundke expects $76,000-$83,000 for the rest of October absent a catalyst, 21shares' Matt Mena still sees $85,000 resistance then $90,000, and CoinShares' James Butterfill called the near-term setup difficult but not fundamentally bearish. What remains open is whether the Fed hikes in October or waits until December, and whether Bitcoin holds the $80,000 area that Glassnode's Oct. 14 report identified as the cluster of large Binance spot bids.
