Bitcoin swings from near $87,000 to $83,100 on oil and Treasury yields, then recovers to $86,600
Bitcoin topped $86,600 in Asian trading on Oct. 5, stalled near $85,500, then recovered to about $86,250 after a weak September jobs report cut the odds of an October Fed rate hike.
Why it matters
Bitcoin has traded as a levered bet on US rates and energy prices through this stretch: the same inflation and yield moves that pushed it from below $63,000 in August to near $87,000 have since driven it back toward $83,000. Separately, the House committee's vote on the American Reserve Modernization Act advances a bill that would create a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve, and CoinDesk reported the SEC separately moved to allow onchain trading of tokenized US stocks.

What happened
Bitcoin reached an eight-month high above $87,000 in late September, then fell to just above $83,100 as the 10-year Treasury yield touched its highest level since 2007 and Brent crude rose for a second day, before recovering. Unchained reported that Bitcoin topped $86,600 in Asian trading on Oct. 5, about $500 short of its late-September peak above $87,000, slipped to about $85,500 and recovered to around $86,250. The pullback in late September tracked macro shocks rather than crypto-specific news: CoinDesk reported the 10-year Treasury yield at its highest since 2007 and Brent above $103 a barrel, and Bitcoin.com News said rising Brent prices and Treasury yields erased $195 million in long crypto bets on Sept. 29. CoinDesk also reported that falling oil and House Financial Services Committee approval of the American Reserve Modernization Act by 28 votes to 21 on Sept. 17 helped a rally that lifted Bitcoin above $86,500 and total crypto market capitalization above $3 trillion, which Cointelegraph also reported the same week. Decrypt said the Crypto Fear and Greed Index stood at 79, while CoinDesk put a sentiment index at 74 out of 100 on Monday. Both CoinDesk and Decrypt reported that Bitcoin traded near $87,000 on late-September intraday highs that the market had not touched in months. Decrypt linked a $15.6 billion Bitcoin options expiry on Deribit to a roughly 0.9% drop to around $83,600 on Friday, with long liquidations of $161.96 million against shorts of $156.1 million. Unchained reported the Bureau of Labor Statistics revised July to a loss of 10,000 jobs and August to a gain of 133,000, and that CME's FedWatch put the odds of a quarter-point increase at the Fed's Oct. 28 decision at 17%, down from close to 36% a week earlier.
