Coinbase data shows Grok drove 59.5% of AI agent trading volume in a week

Coinbase chart puts Grok at 59.54% of AI agent notional volume for Sept. 14-21, against 1.54% for ChatGPT, 13.37% for Claude and 21.73% for custom CLI setups.

Why it matters

Three months after launch, the two chatbots Coinbase picked as launch partners are no longer the largest clients on its own venue, and the agentic trading product has widened from crypto into US stocks and ETFs. The data covers one week and counts dollars rather than users, and Coinbase has not said why the distribution looks this way.

Key facts

Grok clients sent 59.54% of the notional trading volume placed through Coinbase AI agents between Sept. 14 and Sept. 21.

What happened

Coinbase's developer account shared a chart titled 'Where agentic traders come from' that splits notional trading volume by the large language model client sending each order between Sept. 14 and Sept. 21: Grok 59.54%, custom command-line interface setups 21.73%, Claude 13.37%, Perplexity 3.48%, ChatGPT 1.54% and Claude Code 0.35%. The exchange does not usually publish which chatbots its customers trade through, and Coinbase did not break down the figures behind the chart. Brian Armstrong gave a one-line verdict, calling Grok the leading client for agentic traders on Coinbase currently. ChatGPT and Claude were the launch partners when Coinbase unveiled Coinbase for Agents on June 11, and together they now account for under 15% of agent volume, with ChatGPT below a sixtieth. Bitcoin.com News and Crypto News carry the same account, and the reasoning in it for the gap is not attributed to Coinbase: Grok lives inside X where crypto traders already spend their time, and the chart measures dollar volume rather than users, so a handful of large Grok-driven traders could account for much of the total. Bitcoin.com News also reports that Coinbase for Agents added US stocks and ETFs the week of Sept. 22, and that Grok Bot Creator Rewards pays bot builders every two weeks through X Money, with one creator paid $500.
