IMF study finds tokenized stock demand outside U.S. hours, flags volatility and thin liquidity

Why it matters

The findings validate demand for 24/7 equity access and fractional investing but highlight structural immaturity that could hinder broader institutional adoption. Regulators now have IMF-backed data to shape rules for tokenized securities markets.

What happened

The International Monetary Fund published a chapter in its October 2026 Global Financial Stability Report examining the five most liquid tokenized U.S. equity products from issuers Ondo Finance and Backed Finance's xStocks. The study covered 11 trading venues over 365 days and found genuine investor demand for round-the-clock access and fractional ownership, with more than 50% of trades occurring outside regular U.S. market hours and approximately 80% involving less than one share. However, tokenized equities exhibited roughly 1.5 times the volatility of their underlying stocks and significantly weaker liquidity across fragmented venues. Traditional shares absorbed 87% to 99% of overnight tokenized price moves at market open, indicating on-chain prices carry information. The IMF estimated the tokenized equity market at $2.3 billion as of July 31 within a broader $65 billion tokenized real-world asset market, and said systemic risks remain limited while urging regulators to consider circuit breakers for 24/7 trading and stronger legal, liquidity, and interoperability safeguards.
