CFTC Registers Coinbase Clearing LLC, Limited to Fully Collateralized Derivatives
The CFTC registered Coinbase Clearing LLC as a derivatives clearing organization on September 28, limited to fully collateralized futures, options on futures and swaps.
Why it matters
Coinbase now holds the exchange, broker and clearing registrations needed to run much of its US derivatives business without an outside clearing firm, and USDC serves as collateral in a CFTC-registered clearinghouse. The scope stays narrow: margined products and planned single-stock perps still clear elsewhere, and Coinbase has not set a timetable for live clearing.

What happened
The Commodity Futures Trading Commission registered Coinbase Clearing LLC as a derivatives clearing organization, effective September 28, giving Coinbase its own clearinghouse in the United States. The registration covers fully collateralized futures, options on futures and swaps, positions where the clearinghouse holds at all times enough collateral to cover the most a trader could lose, and it does not allow margin. Coinbase already operates Coinbase Derivatives as a designated contract market and Coinbase Financial Markets as a futures commission merchant, so the three registrations put the exchange, brokerage and clearing layers in the company's own hands. Coinbase general counsel Molly Abraham said the approval completes Coinbase's end-to-end derivatives infrastructure with native USDC collateral and 24/7 settlement, and the company calls Coinbase Clearing the first USDC-native clearinghouse. Crypto.News noted that description is Coinbase's own and is not a designation used in the CFTC registry, and Finance Magnates wrote that using USDC is not a condition of the registration. Margined derivatives and the US single-stock perpetual products Coinbase plans stay with outside clearing partners, according to Cointelegraph, Crypto.News and Decrypt. Finance Magnates reported that the registration defines eligible product types without approving individual contracts, and that Coinbase has not said which contracts it will clear itself first or when the clearinghouse goes live.
