Cardano Foundation and Petrobras test Cardano apps for sustainable aviation fuel tracking
The Cardano Foundation said on Sept. 30 that it built two Cardano apps with Petrobras and PUC-Rio research centre Ledger Labs covering sustainable aviation fuel claims and Diesel R.
Why it matters
Both applications are research-stage and no commercial scale is disclosed, so the immediate effect on Cardano usage is limited. The work does put a regulated, state-controlled energy company on a Cardano-based record for emissions-related attributes, and the same book-and-claim accounting problem exists outside Brazil. Regulators and fuel-certificate registries have not been reported as responding to the approach.
Key facts
The sustainable aviation fuel application is designed to determine who may claim the environmental benefit of a specific quantity of SAF, addressing the case where the party claiming the benefit is not the party buying or using the fuel.
Reported by U.Today
SAF certificates are checked against CORSIA and other standards before their attributes are tokenized, after which the tokens can be allocated to airlines or to individual passenger journeys.
Reported by U.Today
CryptoSlate reports that the SAF project represents environmental attributes as standardized CS-SAF tokens on Cardano that can be created, transferred, checked and retired, with retirement blocking a second claim of the same attribute.
Reported by CryptoSlate
Crypto News describes the SAF mechanism as a book-and-claim model in which an airline can buy the environmental benefit even when the fuel is physically used on another flight, requiring the original right holder, the transferee and the time of use to be recorded.
Reported by Crypto News (CryptoNews.net)
The second application connects data from different stages of the fuel lifecycle, covering production, transportation and eventual use of the renewable fuel.
Reported by U.Today
Diesel R is Petrobras' diesel product made with renewable content, described by Crypto News as produced using partially renewable raw materials.
Reported by U.Today
The Cardano Foundation and Petrobras first announced a partnership in December 2023, an education-focused initiative in which Petrobras employees were taught blockchain concepts.

What happened
The Cardano Foundation said on Sept. 30 that it had worked with Brazilian state-controlled energy company Petrobras and the Ledger Labs blockchain research centre at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro on two applications built on Cardano. One covers sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and aims to settle who is entitled to claim the environmental benefit attached to a given quantity of fuel; the other covers Diesel R, Petrobras' diesel product made with renewable content, and links data from production, transportation and use. U.Today reports that SAF certificates are first checked against CORSIA and other standards, then tokenized, and that the resulting tokens can be allocated to airlines or to individual passenger journeys. CryptoSlate reports the same SAF work as a Book-and-Claim model in which the environmental attributes are represented as standardized CS-SAF tokens that can be created, transferred, checked and retired, with retirement preventing the same attribute from being claimed twice and the record tracing back to the original fuel certificate. On Diesel R, CryptoSlate says the model proposes supply-chain checkpoints and that the disclosures leave commercial usage unquantified, while Crypto News describes the second project as tracking data on renewable diesel made from partially renewable raw materials. What is not established is the scale of either project: no volume, funding figure, deployment date or number of certificates tokenized is given in any of the three reports, and Crypto News describes the projects as still being developed. CryptoSlate notes that most of the technical detail on SAF comes from the Foundation's own case study, while Petrobras has not been reported as making a statement of its own. The two projects extend a relationship the Cardano Foundation first announced in December 2023, which U.Today describes as education-focused, with Petrobras employees taught about blockchain concepts.
