Bitget raises hack loss estimate to $387.5 million after Slowmist traces August zero-day
Bitget says attackers drained $387.5 million from its hot and warm wallets on September 24, and Slowmist traced the intrusion to a zero-day exploited on August 31.
Why it matters
CertiK puts third-quarter 2026 crypto security losses at $1.26 billion across 247 incidents, up 53.9% from $819.4 million in Q2, and counts the Bitget theft at roughly 31% of the quarter; CryptoSlate reported the breach pushed September losses above April's, making September the costliest month for hacks in 2026 so far. Bitget says customer balances remain accurate and that its User Protection Fund, holding more than $464 million, covers the whole loss.

Key facts
Bitget's security systems detected unauthorized transfers from some of its hot wallets at 18:31 UTC on September 24, 2026.
Reported by CoinDesk
On-chain researchers tallied about $183 million moving out of wallets labelled as Bitget's before the exchange spoke publicly, and Arkham's Emmett Gallic put the figure at $178 million.

Bitget CEO Gracy Chen said approximately $351.6 million in assets were affected by unauthorized transfers from hot and warm wallets.

Bitget updated its loss tally to $387.5 million, which Chen said reflects a more complete accounting of transfers during the incident.

Bitget says its User Protection Fund holds more than $464 million and covers the full loss.

Chen says attackers did not obtain private keys and did not forge user withdrawal requests, and Cointelegraph reports the exchange concluded attackers exploited a vulnerability in a third-party security product to obtain internal credentials and forge withdrawal commands.
Reported by Decrypt
A Slowmist investigation released September 30 traced the earliest malicious activity to August 31, 25 days before the theft, through a zero-day in a service on one node of a third-party security product the firm calls Product A.

What happened
Bitget detected unauthorized transfers out of some of its hot wallets at 18:31 UTC on September 24, 2026, and CEO Gracy Chen put the loss at $351.6 million, later raising it to $387.5 million. On-chain researchers saw roughly $183 million leave wallets labelled as Bitget's within hours of the detection, and Arkham's Emmett Gallic said three hot wallets and one cold wallet were drained, which contradicts Bitget's claim that its cold wallets were untouched. Bitget says no private keys were taken and that attackers broke into a backend system, spoofing transaction data so the transfers looked legitimate; Slowmist traced the first malicious activity to August 31, when an attacker exploited a zero-day in a third-party security product that Bitcoin.com News refers to as Product A, read a database password out of an environment variable and connected to the database. Chen said IP behaviour patterns and on-chain analysis are highly consistent with known patterns of North Korean hacker organizations, but Bitget has not confirmed who was responsible. Withdrawals remain suspended while deposits and trading continue, XRP is the largest single asset taken at about $157.48 million, and the attacker's current holdings and the exact loss total are both still moving.
How the story developed
- Update
Slowmist dates the intrusion to a zero-day exploited on August 31
The firm's report, current as of September 29, says a hidden script on a Product A node read a database password from an environment variable, with the same activity seen on two more nodes on September 23 and September 25.

Slowmist publishes its investigation into the Bitget breach
Bitget brought the firm in on September 25; its report traces25 days of prior access through an employee identity and a custom withdrawal tool that moved funds for 2 hours and 52 minutes, with suspected North Korean scripts found on September 30 routing proceeds through CoW Protocol and Chainflip.
