Chainalysis finds nearly nine in ten x402 wallets refill within 30 days
Chainalysis reports that nearly nine in ten qualifying x402 wallets received new funding within 30 days and the median gap to a first payment fell to 18 minutes.
Why it matters
A base layer of activity that is recurring rather than one-off is what determines whether agent payments support profitable businesses, and CryptoSlate says payment providers now face that test. BTC-ECHO's figures, more than 87 percent of payments between one hundredth of a cent and ten cents, leave card networks little room to compete and push volume toward stablecoins such as USDC, which also settles where Circle divides the work between card and stablecoin rails.

What happened
Chainalysis published a report, titled Geography of Crypto Report 2026 according to BTC-ECHO, describing how AI agents increasingly pay for data, code analysis and computing resources in cryptocurrency. BTC-ECHO reported that almost 90 percent of active wallets reload their balance within 30 days, against 70 percent in the third quarter of 2025, and that the median stretch between a top-up and a first payment is now 18 minutes, where BTC-ECHO says it was 73 days at the end of 2025. CryptoSlate reported the same 18-minute median against 73 days in late 2025, and said two thirds of newly funded x402 wallets made a payment within an hour in the third quarter, up from 4 percent a year earlier; BTC-ECHO did not publish the one-hour share. CryptoSlate wrote that Coinbase's x402 standard on Base had processed more than 138 million transactions by July, while BTC-ECHO put the total at more than 138 million payments on Base since the launch in May 2025, and named Base the most used network for agentic commerce on Chainalysis's reading. The two outlets also differ on who pays for small tickets: CryptoSlate framed the surge as a test for payment providers, BTC-ECHO reported that more than 87 percent of payments sit between one hundredth of a cent and ten cents and quoted Circle telling Chainalysis that card networks handle consumer-initiated agent payments while stablecoin networks handle machine-to-machine ones. Neither outlet named an individual, and no official response from Coinbase or Circle appears beyond Circle's position as relayed by BTC-ECHO.
